BHOPAL, MADHYA PRADESH — Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has described the ongoing West Bengal Assembly elections as a “festival of democracy”, emphasising the importance of peaceful participation and expressing confidence in a political shift in the state.
Speaking in Bhopal, Scindia said that elections are a celebration of democratic values, where people get the opportunity to express their will through voting. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks, he stated that the elections represent a “clarion call for change” in West Bengal.
He expressed strong confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prospects, saying that the BJP’s flag will fly in West Bengal, reflecting what he described as the people’s desire for change. According to him, the mood of the electorate indicates a shift in political direction, with voters seeking new leadership and governance.
At the same time, Scindia placed significant emphasis on maintaining peace and order during the election process. He said that democracy cannot function effectively in an atmosphere of fear or violence, and that every citizen should be able to vote freely and safely.
He stressed that there is no place for any form of violence in a democratic system, particularly during elections. Highlighting the importance of the voting process, he drew a comparison between voting and visiting a place of worship.
Scindia said that the act of voting is as sacred as going to a temple for darshan, underlining the respect and seriousness that should be associated with it. Just as violence is unacceptable in religious spaces, he said, it should also be completely unacceptable at polling booths.
He urged all stakeholders, including political parties, workers, and voters, to ensure that elections are conducted in a peaceful and fair manner. According to him, maintaining the sanctity of the electoral process is essential for the strength and credibility of democracy.
The Union Minister also highlighted that free and fair elections are the foundation of democratic governance, and any disruption to this process weakens public trust. He called on authorities to remain vigilant and ensure that law and order is maintained throughout the polling period.
Observers note that elections in West Bengal have often been closely watched due to concerns over violence and intense political competition. In this context, Scindia’s remarks reflect a broader call for restraint, discipline, and respect for democratic institutions.
He further added that the responsibility of ensuring peaceful elections lies not only with the administration but also with political parties and citizens, who must act responsibly and avoid any actions that could disturb the process.
Scindia’s comments come amid heightened political activity in West Bengal, where multiple parties are contesting fiercely for power. His statement combines both political messaging about change and a strong appeal for non-violence and democratic conduct.
