BHOPAL — In a major breakthrough against organized crime, the Madhya Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) has successfully dismantled an extortion syndicate operating under the name of the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The operation led to the arrest of three key individuals involved in a high-profile ransom demand targeting a prominent businessman in the Kolar area of the state capital.
Speaking to the media on Friday, STF DIG Rahul Lodha confirmed that the crackdown was initiated after a local complainant reported receiving death threats and a ransom demand from an individual identifying himself as “Harry Boxer” (Hari Chandra), a known overseas operative and aide of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.
Modus Operandi: Digital Fear and Reconnaissance
The case highlights a chilling trend in modern extortion tactics where criminals use digital surveillance to intimidate their targets. According to DIG Lodha, the victim was first contacted via WhatsApp calls and voice notes. To amplify the fear, the gang sent a video of the businessman’s own residence to his phone, proving they had conducted a secret reconnaissance of his daily movements and security.
The Investigation and Arrests
The investigative trail began with the video sent to the victim. STF sleuths traced the digital footprint of the clip to Nirmal Tiwari, a resident of Banda in Uttar Pradesh. Tiwari was apprehended on April 16, 2026. Under interrogation, he confessed to being hired to film the footage of the victim’s house.
The investigation further revealed a multi-layered network:
- Nirmal Tiwari (The Scout): An unemployed youth paid approximately 10,000 to conduct the reconnaissance and film the video.
- Anand Mishra (The Handler): Also a resident of Banda, Mishra allegedly hired Tiwari and forwarded the video to Harry Boxer, who is believed to be operating from abroad. Mishra was arrested while attempting to flee to Nepal.
- Jaiprakash Dara (The Financier): Arrested from Bikaner, Rajasthan, Dara provided the logistical and financial support necessary to sustain the operation within Madhya Pradesh.
Connections to Harry Boxer
Harry Boxer has recently emerged as a significant figure in the Bishnoi gang’s international operations. Known for his “boxing coach” background, he has been linked to several extortion attempts against high-profile celebrities, including Bollywood actors and filmmakers.
DIG Lodha noted that Anand Mishra was in constant communication with Boxer via secure messaging apps. While the gang used these platforms to evade detection, the STF was able to intercept critical links that led to the local operatives.
Broader Impact on Madhya Pradesh
This arrest comes at a time when Madhya Pradesh has seen a rise in extortion attempts linked to Punjab-based and Lawrence Bishnoi-affiliated gangs. Recent reports suggest these groups have been scraping data from government portals—such as GST and RERA—to identify wealthy targets like builders and jewellers.
The STF is now working in coordination with police departments in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Haryana to uncover the wider network. “Anand Mishra and Jaiprakash Dara have prior criminal records and were out on bail. We are currently interrogating them to see if they are involved in other unsolved extortion cases in the state,” the DIG added.
Government Stance on Organized Crime
The successful operation is being seen as a victory for the Mohan Yadav-led government, which has vowed to implement a “zero-tolerance” policy toward organized crime. The Chief Minister has reportedly instructed the state police to maintain a high state of alert and ensure the safety of the business community.
The three accused have been produced before a local court and remanded to police custody for further questioning. The police are also pursuing Pradip Shukla, another suspected key member of the second-layer racket, for whom a reward has been declared.
As the investigation continues, authorities urge citizens to report any suspicious calls or messages immediately to the local police or the STF helpline, rather than engaging with the extortionists.
