Congress Challenges BJP Over Women’s Reservation: Jitu Patwari Demands Immediate Implementation on Existing 543 Seats

Date:

BHOPAL – In a sharp escalation of the political tug-of-war over gender representation, Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitendra (Jitu) Patwari has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of “misleading the nation” regarding the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill.

Speaking to the media in Bhopal, Patwari asserted that while the Congress party has historically championed the cause of women’s empowerment, the current government’s approach is a calculated delay tactic. He challenged the Centre to implement the 33% reservation immediately on the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats, rather than waiting for a post-census delimitation exercise.

“A Legacy of Empowerment, Not Political Theatre”

Patwari emphasized that the Congress party’s commitment to women’s rights is not a recent development. He reminded the public that the party has long advocated for quotas in legislative bodies, citing past efforts by former party presidents and the UPA government.

The MP Congress Chief argued that by linking the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam to the completion of a new census and the subsequent delimitation of constituencies, the BJP is effectively pushing the actual benefit of the law years into the future. He described this linkage as a “betrayal” of the women who are ready to lead today.

The Delimitation Deadlock

The core of the dispute lies in the technicalities of the 106th Amendment Act. While the bill was passed with fanfare, its operationalization is contingent upon:

  1. The conduct of the first Census after the Act’s commencement.
  2. A Delimitation exercise to redraw constituency boundaries based on that census data.

Patwari and other Congress leaders argue that these conditions serve as a “jumla” (empty promise), suggesting that the reservation might not see the light of day until 2029 or even 2034. The Congress Legislature Party in Madhya Pradesh has signaled its intent to introduce a resolution demanding immediate implementation without the wait for delimitation.

Internal Reforms: No Tickets for Kin

Beyond critiquing the BJP, Patwari is also pushing for internal reform within the Congress party to ensure genuine representation. He recently announced a significant policy shift: reserved seats for women will not be given to the wives, daughters, or relatives of established male leaders.

  • Active Participation: Tickets will be reserved exclusively for active members of the Mahila Congress.
  • Merit-Based: The move aims to dismantle the “proxy candidate” culture where male politicians maintain power through female family members.
  • Formal Resolution: Patwari confirmed that the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) will pass a formal resolution to solidify this rule.

A Showdown in the Assembly

The political climate in Bhopal remains tense as the state assembly prepares for a pivotal session. While Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has lauded PM Modi for a “transformative step” in women’s upliftment, the Opposition is gearing up to protest what they call “anti-women policies.”

As the 2026 political calendar unfolds, the demand for “Reservation Now” is becoming a central pillar of the Congress’s strategy to counter the BJP’s narrative of Nari Shakti. By demanding action on the current 543 seats, the Congress is attempting to force the government’s hand: either implement the quota immediately or admit to a long-term delay.
