Major Counterfeit Currency Racket Busted in Bhopal; MBBS Doctor from West Bengal Arrested

Date:

BHOPAL, MADHYA PRADESH — In a major breakthrough against the circulation of counterfeit Indian currency, the Bhopal Police have busted a sophisticated racket operating in the state capital. On May 7, 2026, acting on a precise tip-off, the Koh-e-Fiza police conducted a targeted raid resulting in the arrest of a 25-year-old man in possession of fake currency notes with a face value of ₹1.4 lakh.

The arrest was confirmed by Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar during a press briefing, where he detailed the operation and the high-tech methods used by the accused to evade detection.

The Raid at Safia College Grounds

The operation began when police received intelligence regarding a suspicious individual attempting to sell high-quality counterfeit notes at a fraction of their face value. A team was dispatched to the vicinity of the Safia College Grounds, where they intercepted the suspect, identified as Saif-ul-Islam.

Upon searching the suspect’s belongings, officers recovered:

  • 280 counterfeit notes of ₹500 denomination.
  • A high-end iPhone and an Android device used for encrypted communication.
  • Identification documents claiming the suspect is an MBBS doctor from West Bengal.

The recovered notes were of remarkably high quality, spanning four different serial number series, suggesting a professional-grade printing operation behind the supply chain.

High-Tech Evasion: The International Connection

One of the most startling revelations from the investigation is the suspect’s use of technology to bypass local surveillance. Commissioner Sanjay Kumar noted that the accused utilized an international SIM card (+44 UK series) on his iPhone to conduct business exclusively via WhatsApp and other encrypted calling platforms.

Initial interrogations revealed that the accused has been living in Bhopal for a significant period. Despite his medical background, he allegedly turned to the counterfeit trade to fund an expensive lifestyle and clear personal debts.

Probing the Larger Syndicate

The Bhopal Police are now investigating whether this arrest is part of a larger, organized network. Preliminary digital forensic analysis of the seized mobile phones has uncovered several “suspicious transactions” that point toward a broader syndicate.

Authorities are exploring several angles, including:

  1. The Source: Police believe the notes were transported from West Bengal to Bhopal, potentially originating from cross-border networks.
  2. The “Doctor” Identity: Investigations are underway to verify the authenticity of the suspect’s medical degrees and whether he practiced medicine in the city as a cover for his illegal activities.
  3. Local Distribution: Efforts are being made to identify local agents or small-scale vendors who may have unknowingly or knowingly helped circulate these notes into the city’s markets.

Community Safety and Judicial Remand

Following his arrest, Saif-ul-Islam was produced before a local court, which granted the police a 7-day remand for further interrogation. The police aim to use this time to trace the “masterminds” supplying the counterfeit currency.

The Bhopal Police have issued an advisory to local business owners and citizens to remain vigilant when handling ₹500 notes. Citizens are encouraged to check for standard security features—such as the RBI watermark, the security thread color shift, and the latent image—especially during high-volume transactions.

This successful operation underscores the department’s commitment to maintaining economic stability and protecting the public from financial fraud. As the investigation deepens, more arrests are expected in connection with this inter-state racket.
