Bhopal Breathes Easier: India’s First ‘Algaee Tree’ Unveiled to Combat Urban Pollution

BHOPAL, MADHYA PRADESH – In a pioneering move toward sustainable urban living, Bhopal has become the first city in India to host a revolutionary “Algae Tree.” Installed at the Swami Vivekananda Park, this biotech innovation is designed to act as a powerful air purifier, converting carbon dioxide into life-sustaining oxygen at a rate significantly higher than traditional greenery.

The initiative, led by the Mushroom World Group, represents a significant leap in “Photosynthesis 2.0″—a concept where nature’s biological processes are amplified through modern engineering to meet the challenges of 21st-century pollution.


The Science Behind the ‘Tree’

While it may not look like a traditional oak or neem, the Algae Tree is a biological powerhouse. It utilizes living microalgae housed within a specialized glass structure (a photobioreactor) to perform rapid carbon sequestration.

Performance Breakdown:

  • Carbon-to-Oxygen Efficiency: One Algae Tree is estimated to be as effective as 25 mature trees in terms of carbon dioxide absorption and oxygen production.
  • Solar Powered: To ensure the system remains carbon-neutral, it features solar panels on top. These panels provide the energy required to circulate the algae and maintain the internal environment.
  • Air Scrubbing: Beyond carbon, the system is designed to trap harmful pollutants, including Particulate Matter (PM2.5 and PM10), as well as Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and Sulfur Oxides (SOx), which are common in urban traffic zones.

Why Algae?

Microalgae are among the fastest-growing organisms on Earth. In dense urban environments where land for traditional afforestation is scarce, these “liquid trees” provide a compact solution. They do not require vast tracts of soil and can be installed in high-traffic areas, bus stands, or public parks where air quality is often at its worst.

Sameer Sagar and Shakti Sagar, Directors of Mushroom World Group, emphasized during the unveiling that the project is about “active climate infrastructure.” Unlike passive greenery, which takes years to mature, the Algae Tree provides immediate, measurable benefits to the local microclimate.
