Nalanda University Revival Marks Global Intellectual Renaissance: President Droupadi Murmu

Date:

On March 31, 2026, Droupadi Murmu addressed the second convocation ceremony of Nalanda University, delivering a message that blended pride in India’s heritage with a forward-looking vision for global academic collaboration. Her speech highlighted the deeper meaning behind the revival of Nalanda, one of the world’s most celebrated ancient centers of learning, emphasizing that its restoration goes far beyond a national achievement.

The President described the re-establishment of Nalanda University as a symbol of a broader intellectual and cultural awakening. She noted that the revival is not limited to Bihar or India but represents a renaissance for the entire world. By invoking Nalanda’s historical significance as a hub of knowledge that once attracted scholars from across Asia and beyond, she underlined how the modern institution aims to rekindle that same spirit of global learning and exchange.

A key aspect of her address focused on the international nature of the university. Nalanda University has been developed as a Centre of International Excellence with the support and cooperation of member nations of the East Asia Summit. The President emphasized that this collaboration reflects shared global values such as knowledge-sharing, cultural understanding, and peaceful cooperation. This multinational support positions Nalanda as a unique institution that bridges countries, cultures, and academic traditions.

President Murmu also praised the university’s efforts to engage with the local community. She highlighted that integrating nearby communities into the institution’s activities ensures inclusive growth and strengthens the relationship between education and society. According to her, such initiatives not only benefit students but also contribute to regional development, making education more accessible and impactful at the grassroots level.

Looking ahead, the President connected the role of Nalanda University to India’s long-term national goals. She stated that the institution would play a significant role in achieving the vision of a “Developed India” by 2047, marking 100 years of independence. By fostering high-quality education, research, and global partnerships, Nalanda is expected to contribute to innovation, leadership, and knowledge creation that can support the country’s progress.

During the ceremony, degrees and academic titles were awarded to students from thirty-one different countries, reflecting the university’s growing global reach and diversity. This international representation reinforced Nalanda’s identity as a global academic hub, echoing its ancient legacy when students from various parts of the world came to study there.

In addition to the convocation, several important developments took place on campus. President Murmu inaugurated the Centre for South-East Asian Studies, which is expected to strengthen academic research and collaboration focused on the Southeast Asian region. This initiative aligns with India’s broader efforts to deepen ties with neighboring countries through cultural and educational exchanges.

She also inaugurated the ‘Vishwamitralaya’ Auditorium, a major new facility with a seating capacity of 2,000. The auditorium is expected to host academic events, conferences, and cultural programs, further enhancing the university’s infrastructure and its ability to function as a global academic center.

The event was attended and addressed by prominent leaders, including Syed Ata Hasnain, who is currently serving as Governor, and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. Their presence highlighted the importance of the occasion at both national and international levels.

Overall, the convocation ceremony marked a significant milestone in the journey of Nalanda University. Through her address, President Murmu reinforced the idea that the university is not just an educational institution but a symbol of India’s commitment to global knowledge, cultural dialogue, and inclusive development.
